The Tidy Shelf

How to sort the kitchen drawer you’ve been avoiding

· Daniel Price

Every kitchen has one: the drawer with takeaway menus, dead batteries, a single chopstick and three pens that don’t work. It’s where things go when they don’t have a home, which is exactly why it fills up.

Start by taking everything out and putting it on the table. It feels like more mess, but you can’t sort what you can’t see. Then make three piles: keep, belongs somewhere else, and bin.

Be honest about the keep pile. If you haven’t used it since you moved in, you probably won’t. Small boxes or old jars make good dividers, so every item gets its own spot.

Last step: give the drawer one job. If it’s for the tools you use while cooking, that’s all that goes in. A drawer with a clear purpose is much harder to fill with junk.
